JUST IN: Mawarire Granted $2k Bail

Cleric and leader of #ThisFlag movement Pastor Evan Mawarire has been granted $2 000 bail by High Court Judge, Justice Tawanda Chitapi.

Mawarire spend spend two weeks in remand following his arrest during the shutdown protests.

He is accused of subverting a constitutional government.

Mawarire represented by Tonderai Bhatasara of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights denies the allegations arguing that he only exercised his right by urging people to demonstrate peacefully.

He is also arguing that the video evidence which the state’s case is centred on is weak as he never urged people to act in a violent manner but rather emphasized on ‘no violence.’

Mawarire had been denied bail by the Harare magistrate court on the grounds that he is a flight risk.

The bail was granted together with other conditions which are, to surrender travelling documents, surrender his parents’ house title deeds as a surety and to report thrice a week at Avondale police station.
