Police Commissioner Orders Arrest of Rogue Motorists

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has warned motorists driving vehicles without number plates or those fitted with illegal blue lights and sirens that they risk arrest and having their vehicles impounded.

In a statement, National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they had noted a growing trend of motorists driving plateless vehicles and fitting their cars with unauthorised gadgets such as blue lights, sirens, bar lights and beams.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with concern a disturbing trend of Zimbabweans who are continuously driving vehicles with no registration numbers or plates on the country’s roads with total disregard of the law,” police said.

Police reminded motorists that driving without number plates or fitting unauthorised blue lights and other gadgets was a serious offence.

“It is regrettable for the Zimbabwe Republic Police to remind Zimbabweans that it is a serious offence for any motorist or individual to drive vehicles without number plates in the country or fit blue lights and other gadgets on vehicles which are not permitted,” said Nyathi.

Nyathi said the Commissioner-General of Police, Stephen Mutamba has directed all police stations, districts and provinces to take action against motorists found violating the law.

“The Commissioner-General of Police has directed all Police stations, Districts and Provinces to take stern action by effecting arrests and impounding all vehicles with no registration plates and those with illegal blue lights or fittings,” he said.

The commissioner warned that motorists would not be allowed to use excuses to avoid enforcement action.

“No excuses from drivers or motorists will be entertained by police officers to enable the effective maintenance of law and order in the country to be enhanced,” he said.
