Land reform not reversible: Made

Minister of Agriculture, Mechanization and Irrigation Development Dr Joseph Made today said that there is no turning back on the land reform programme .

Dr Made made the remakes while officiating at the launch of the Strengthening the national Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standards (SPS) Institution Framework in Zimbabwe project.

“We have said it before, and I want to make it clear today that the land issue is not reversible as this a program that we implemented in order to empower our people,” he said.

“We are discussing this on another forum with the EU but I want you all to know that we are never going to reverse the land distribution exercise and all those who want to engage us should come to us knowing our position,” Made further explained.

He added that the land distribution exercise benefited  A1, A2 farmers hence there was no need to redo the exercise.

“The state benefitted to some extent through the Agriculture Rural Development Authority but our main thrust was and still is to benefit the majority of Zimbabweans who are the rightful owners of this God given land

“Our message to you Ambassador Van Damme and the European Union is that if your union wants to engage us, do not give us conditions with regards the land distribution exercise.

“There should be total focus on how best we are going to fund these farmers so they produce enough food to feed the country and anyone who comes to do work with us, from a developmental point of view, has a choice to choose from which point they are going to assist these farmers,” said Dr Made.

Zimbabwe and the EU have been on a re-engagement path after more than a decade of hostility when the latter imposed targeted sanctions due to what the European Bloc termed illegal and violent farm invasions.

However, the two have maintained minimum trade relations which seem to have increased in the past few years.

Currently, Zimbabwe is working on re-engaging the International Monetary Fund so as to clear the debt that the country owes thereby opening up opportunities for credit facilities.
