Manyuchi honoured

Top Zimbabwean boxer Charles Manyuchi on Tuesday received recognition for his feats on the international boxing stage with Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko handing the boxer his diplomatic passport.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight silver champion was given a diplomatic passport and US$5,000 ahead of his defense title fight against Damien Martin of France at the Harare International Conference Center on September 30.

The soft spoken boxer has continued to gain recognition for his impressive performances abroad and government befittingly handed over the passport at a sendoff ceremony for the Zimbabwe Paralympic team.

Vice President Mphoko who was the guest of honor at the sendoff ceremony paid homage to the diminutive boxer

OQBP, a Zambian stable which promotes Manyuchi, through its operations manager Christopher Malunga, commended the Zimbabwean government for awarding Manyuchi the diplomatic passport .

Malunga said great Manyuchi deserved to be treated with honour because it was not easy to fly the country’s flag high.

“Manyuchi is a great boxer and we are happy that the government of Zimbabwe is motivating him before the September 30 fight. We are delighted by the Zimbabwean government’s support,” he said.

Malunga revealed that all was set for the staging of the fight at Harare International Conference Centre and Manyuchi was in shape.

He said the boxer was committed to training to ensure the title remains in Zimbabwe.

“Coach Mike Zulu is doing a good job to make sure the boxer is ready for the defense title fight. The boxer is putting in the very best in training,” Malunga said.

In May, Manyuchi defeated Russia’s Dmitry Mikhaylenko in Russia to become the WBC welterweight silver champion and last Saturday the Zimbabwean beat Samuel Deogratias of Tanzania in a non-title fight in Lusaka.
