Former cabinet minister Professor Jonathan Moyo has scoffed at Zanu PF’s resolution to endorse President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the sole party presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.
Moyo, who emerged a sharp critic of President Mnangagwa government post November 2017 power transition, is yet to see any better from his former colleagues in the Zanu PF.
Writing on Twitter on Saturday, Moyo said the decision by the party to endorse President Mnangagwa as the presidential candidate was evidence that the revolutionary party had thrown away its liberation struggle objective of serving the people and instead preoccupied itself with power hence entrenched in election mode.
“Poor leaders with no vision think of the next election; while great leaders with a vision solve problems today, thinking of the next generation!” Moyo said.
Human rights lawyer David Coltart threw a jibe at the ruling party’s decision to endorse President Mnangagwa as the sole presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.
“We don’t have fuel for 2019 but we already have a president for 2023.
“I wish I could take the kudos for this but I can’t – some comic has just tweeted that the Mnangagwa regime is the #secondhandrepublic ! Nothing to describe the mess wrought by the ruining party could be more appropriate,” he wrote.
The Zanu PF resolutions at the just ended annual People’s conference draw mixed reactions with the public questioning the rationale behind indulging into election mode barely six months after the 2018 elections.
Zimbabwe’s 30 July 2018 elections saw Mnangawa declared the winner by the constitutional court when the opposition MDC President Nelson Chamisa unsuccessful challenged the presidential results with economic turmoil following suit recently with fuel shortage reaching acute stages.
