New Gospel Music Star Born in Mzansi


In South Africa, Zimbabwe has created yet another gem in Lindi Marc born Lindiwe Phiri, whose arrival on the gospel music scene has already shook the industry that has of late been struggling to match the bar set by circular Zimdancehall genre.

Lindi Marc’s nine track debut album titled Vhurai Nzira composed of songs in Ndebele, Shona, Sotho and English has already cemented her place in the book of fame as she was able show her versatility and appeal to different audiences.

In an exclusive interview with 263Chat, Lindi’s Manager, Marcellus Moses Kross, who is also her husband, described the latest offering as a bowl full of spiritual food.

“The inspirational and spiritual gospel songs on the album turns to feed people’s spiritual mind-set and emotional consciousness,” said Kross.

The release of her debut album was followed by a top-notch video for the title track “Vhurai Nzira”, which is already making waves in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Having started her musical career at the tender age of 7, Lindi Marc believes her music is inspired by her personal life experiences.

Lindi who doubles as a composer and performer says she believe in composing original songs though she at times sample and rearrange other musicians’ songs.

“Lindi as young brave girl child in Zimbabwe had no escape to daily tough and rough economic and social challenge faced by ordinary Zimbabweans.

She couldn’t stand for hunger, starvation, painful suffering experienced by her peers at home as she also had sibling and family to look after like the rest she got an opportunity to face the word outside Zimbabwe, looking for better opportunity’s hence during 2008 she come to South Africa with one mission to pursue her music career; preach Great God Good News and Praise Almighty head creator.

Jesu Vhurai Nzira” was a prayer coming out of her heart when she was planning to come to Johannesburg. She has lived by this word all her life,” said Kross.

In Jesu Vhurai Nzira, Lindi narrates her rough and tough path to God.

“I used to do odd works for my survival in a bid to send money back home in Zimbabwe. I was once a cleaner in a hair salon in Johannesburg and sometimes I would be offered work to sell food in restaurants and that is where I met music producer Marcellus Moses who by grace of God became my husband,” said Lindi.

The upcoming gospel diva has seen her fame grow beyond the borders of Zimbabwe and South Africa into Nigeria, where her songs are now being played while radio stations have been scrambling to interview her.

Lindi says she is inspired by popular gospel musicians including Mai Charamba, Mercy Mutsvene and South African Winnie Mashaba.
