The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) has announced a provisional squad of 32 players as preparations for the Junior World Cup to be held in Santiago, Chile from 24 November to 4 December 2016.

The final team of 18 traveling and five non-traveling reserves will be announced after further assessments of players during and after the proposed training camp which is set to run from 16 to 19 June 2016 in Harare.

In an interview with 263chat, HAZ Vice president, Humphrey Chigwedere said the purpose of the camp is to assess the fitness of the girls as well as give everyone called to prove themselves.

“We are having our camp this weekend so that we know where we are in terms of fitness of the girls.

This is also when most of all the foreign based players will be in the country on University vacation so we are making use of this time,’ said Chigwedere.

He added that the team consists of 17 locally based players whilst the rest are based outside the country attending studies in countries such as Australia, Britain, South Africa and the United States of America.

Chigwedere said the technical team remains unchanged as they try to bring continuity to the team ahead of the World cup.

He however, urged corporates to come on body and support the girls as a lot of financial resources are needed for camp and preparations.

“We are urging corporates to support us in our quest to try and win the world cup,” he said.

Zimbabwe will be making their first appearance at the junior tournament since 2005 which were ironically held in Santiago.
