Government Admits To Under-funding Cultural Activities

Culture is important as it provides a platform for everyone to appreciate the importance of their backgrounds Minister of Rural Development Promotion and Preservation of National Culture Abednico Ncube has said.

Minister Ncube made the remarks while officially launching this year’s edition of Culture Week in Bindura on Saturday.

He encouraged Zimbabweans to be proud of their culture adding that this year’s culture week running under the theme, “Consolidating Cultural Identity, Diversity and Heritage” is set to promote and facilitate the practice of culture by everyone irrespective of their communities.

“We remain proud of Zimbabwe and to be part of the global community. We need to make sure that we continue to respect, embrace and safeguard all our unique cultural aspects for posterity,” said Ncube.

Ncube said economic hardships were a deterrent to the development of culture centres in the country.

“We are trying to visit cultural centers all over the county but we cannot do it every day,” he said.

He urged communities to safeguard their respective cultural practices.

“I am urging communities to safeguard their respective cultural practices no matter how small a community may be, its unique cultural contribution to Zimbabwe and cannot be ignored,” said Ncube.

He added that if a cultural practice is under threat of extinction, there is need to join hands to safeguard it emphasizing that government is ready ready to offer technical guidance.
