Mixed feelings over Tsvangirai’s plan to dodge coalition

MDC-T leader, Mr Morgan Tsvangirai’s sentiment that he would  rather get legitimately elected and be given the mandate by the people to rule meanwhile staying away from a possible coalition of opposition parties has stirred debate with some people saying the remarks were spot-on, while others said they were misplaced.

Tsvangirai reportedly told journalists in Gweru last week that President Robert Mugabe’s “deceitful behaviour” during the GNU showed him the dangers of coalitions based on differing ideologies.

Most 263chat Twitter followers said Tsvangirai’s statement that he will fight Zanu PF alone  made sense, but others, including  opposition parties, dubbed the statement as the worst political decision.

Democratic Party spokesperson Jacob Mafume contends that there is no substitute for a coalition.

“A coalition is a must if we are talking about taking power from the ruling party . The examples are abound in Africa the latest example being Nigeria APC and even in Zambia. The problem with some of our leaders is that they like celebrity status and adoring crowds singing and praising themselves to nowhere .At some point opposition leaders have to understand that opposition politics is not like running a band,” said Mafume.

He added that if opposition parties want power to change people’s lives,  forming a coalition is the way to go.
