Tsvangirai Endorse Chinese Company For BVR

Contrary to opposition parties’ pessimistic rhetoric against the awarding of a Chinese company, Laxton Group Limited, the tender to supply Bio-metric Voter Registration kits, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) leader Morgan Tsvangirai made a u-turn, endorsing the company, assuring his supporters that they have nothing to fear.

Addressing thousands of supporters who gathered at Mkoba Stadium in Gweru for his star rally on Saturday, Tsvangirai said there is nothing to fear as Laxton Group Limited had previously worked with the United Nations, ruling out prospects of meddling in the hotly contested Zimbabwe electoral process.

Recently, MDC-T Spokesperson, Obert Gutu accused Zanu PF through the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) of trying to use BVR machines to manipulate the voting process and steal the 2018 elections.

But Tsvangirai appeared to give a thumps up to the company saying BVR cannot be manipulated.

“The BVR machines are coming; we are the ones who pressurized government to use the BVR system because we want to remove the dead who vote and stop those who vote multiple times.

“BVR is going to stop that and I tell you it cannot be manipulated. Do not doubt just because it’s the Chinese supplying them, these Chinese have worked with the United Nations in other nations so let us not doubt just because it’s the Chinese and think we will be rigged, do not fear,” he said.

The former Prime Minister said ZEC should demonstrate its independence and live up to their word that no one will be left out in the registration process.

Tsvangirai said if Zanu PF steals its way to power he won’t accept the results and let Zimbabweans be ruled by a minority party.

As part of the highlights of the day, eight War Veterans and War Collaborators from Mashonaland East province officially defected from Zanu PF to join MDC-T citing suffering and ill-treatment.

On coalition, Tsvangirai said talks are a bilateral issue and the party has a right to choose who works with them.

“Everyone is talking about a coalition and the coalition we have in Zimbabwe is complicated because it’s before the election. In other countries like Britain they did it after the elections results so we don’t know qualitatively or quantitatively who is coming with who.

“As MDC we have our conditions, we have a right to choose our parties and I have told this to other opposition leaders and it’s against the national interest to compete against each other,” he said.

Of late opposition parties and some Civic Society Organisations accused the State Procurement Board of forcing ZEC to award the tender to Laxton ahead of German based firm Dermalog Identification Systems a move they said was politically motivated.
