Two brothers were dragged to court after stealing $18 107 from Athientis Five Avenue Supermarket in Harare early this year.

Patrick Zengeni 28 and Eliah Zengeni 31 stood before Harare magistrate court yesterday after  being arrested of theft.

The court heard that on the 2nd of January 2016 at around 00:00 hours, the accused persons broke into the shop and took $18 107.

The complainant, Enos Shonhiwa, who is the assistant manager, reported the case to the police upon discovering that the money was missing.

Police investigated the case leading to the arrest of Patrick Zengeni, who used to work at the shop as a security guard.

Patrick admitted charges and confessed that he committed the crime together with his brother, Eliah.

Patrick told the court that they bought two cars after robbing the shop.

Eliah denied the charges laid against him saying he was not there when the crime was committed. He said Patrick had asked him to register one of the cars in his name.

“My brother asked me to buy a car and register it in my name. Patrick told me that he got the money from his former employer,” said the co-accused.

Magistrate Francis Mapfumo, however remanded the case to 30 March 2016.
