Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai believes the ruling Zanu PF will not stand against a strategically implemented coalition in the 2018 elections.

In a press statement released to the media on Monday, the party’s Spokesperson, Obert Gutu said his party is confident that should all opposition parties in Zimbabwe come together, Zanu PF will not stand a chance.

“The MDC passionately believes in a people – driven as opposed to a leaders – driven political discourse. Whilst we appreciate that a coalition of opposition political parties, if carefully structured and strategically implemented, can give the Zanu PF dictatorship a crushing and humiliating defeat in a free and fair election.

“The MDC is acutely mindful of the need to always take into consideration the interests of the majority of the toiling masses of Zimbabwe whenever an electoral coalition pact is to be entered into,” said Gutu.

With reports that MDC- T snubbed a meeting of opposition political parties in Cape Town, South Africa, together Zimbabwe People First, (ZPF), it remains to be seen if a coalition by 2018 will be a reality considering that there are sharp differences on the way forward.

People’s Democratic Party led by former Finance Minister, Tendai Biti attacked MDC-T over their alleged participation in secret talks with a Zanu PF faction purportedly led by Emmerson Mnangagwa. Biti’s party also accused MDC-T of over estimating its stamina, in a clear indication of sharp differences that may make it difficult for them to sit on one table and agree on a single candidate to face President Mugabe.

Justifying his party’s decision to snub the Cape Town talks, Gutu said the meeting was a Zanu PF idea adding that they have always put people first in all their policy deliberations.

“As a social democratic political party enjoying massive grassroots support, the MDC has always put people first in all its dealings and policy making deliberations,” he said.
