Gvt to revitalise primary health care

Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr David Parirenyatwa said government is in the process of  revitalising primary health care in order to  give communities adequate health care.

Addressing members of the press after touring Mabvuku Polyclinic  which has since been transformed into a hospital after Harare City Council equipped the centre with advanced health machinery through a fund availed by ZimHealth, a Switzerland based non-governmental organisation.

“Our vision as the ministry is to revitalise the primary health sector, to  give  health services in the communities ,” said Dr Parirenyatwa adding the ministry was also targeting village health centres.

Dr Parirenyatwa added that the ministry was  also expanding its vision to the urban areas as well as expanding facilities in polyclinics.

“Much more is to be done in polyclinics around the country.

“We are doing this so that if a child is  seriously injured , the child must get immediate medical attention where ever that child might be, unlike to be transferred to Harare hospital. What I am saying is, we need to have all those services needed in poly clinics,” he said.

He added that, “If a person encounters a problem while in, let’s say, Kuwadzana, it is not necessary for that person to go to Harare Hospital for an X-ray. We want those services to be in our areas so that we won’t waste time.”

Harare City Health director Dr Prosper Chonzi applauded government for facilitating in the implementation of the project which he says will see a  reduction in maternal mortality.

“This Clinic was catering for a very small population but now the population has increased dramatically, hence a lot more women with complications are now being referred to Parirenyatwa or Harare hospitals,” he said.
