In the wake of deadly protests that rocked the Harare Central Business District yesterday, government has said it has enough artillery to deal with rogue elements who cause disharmony and violence.
Addressing journalists soon after a wave of violence which saw business coming to to a halt, Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Ignatius Chombo condemned the mayhem caused by alleged MDC-T youths. Dr Chombo said those that are caught on the wrong side of the law will live to regret
“Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC-T party are to blame for all this and police are going to take appropriate action against those who are organizing and taking part in these demonstrations
“We cannot sit and watch while such things are being perpetrated by these malcontents who are bereft of ideas and have become irrelevant in the current political matrix,” fumed Dr Chombo.
He accused the MDC-T of running out of ideas of toppling President Mugabe from power and thus they have resorted to violent means.
“Comrade Tsvangirai and his MDC-T supporters are now bereft of ideas, they lost the political plot a long time ago and are basically politically irrelevant to the country’s political situation,” Dr Chombo added.
He warned the public against inciting or being involved in violent protests and warned that the police is on standby to deal with any rogue elements who will want to cause mishaps.
Meanwhile Police National Spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba has condemned the looting that occurred in and around the Harare Central Business District.
She said the police is in the process of identifying the perpetrators whom she said will be brought to book.
She said a police bus was also burnt at Market Square, and several business people and individuals are still reporting cases of damage to their properties.
Among those shops looted, was Choppies which is owned by Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko.
“They burnt a police vehicle, a bus and looted several shops, among them Choppies Supermarket. Police officers are still on the ground and several people have been arrested. Some people are coming reporting cases of damage to their property,” said Charamba.
She added that police will not allow violent demonstrations where people go about carrying stones and all forms of weapons with violent intentions.
