Strangers Besiege Crisis Coalition Chairperson’s House

Eight unidentified men driving two unmarked vehicles besieged Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) Chairperson and Heal Zimbabwe Trust Director Rashid Mahiya’s house as the state escalates its target on civil society leaders amid threats of subverting a constitutionally elected government.

According to the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, the unidentified men visited Mahiya’s house in the early morning of today, though they did not provide further details on whether the pro-democracy campaigner was was around or not.

“Early this morning 8 unidentified men driving 2 unmarked vehicles besieged the house of , Director. Over the past 2 weeks, 7 Human Rights Defenders were arrested and charged with subverting a constitutionally elected government,” tweeted NGO Forum.

Last week, police arrested more than five civil society leaders upon landing at the Robert Mugabe International Airport accusing them of receiving training from a Serbian organisation to cause instability in the country for purposes of regime change.

The arrested civil society leaders including Nyasha Frank Mpahlo, George Makoni, Tatenda Mombeyarara and Gamuchirai Mukura among others and are still detained after the Harare Magistrates Court denied them bail.

They have since made an appeal at the High Court but the ruling will be made on the 7th of June.

Mahiya is out on bail following his arrest over January 14 national shutdown.
