Louis van Gaal: It was a bad tackle on Luke Shaw by Hector Moreno

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was critical of the tackle that led to Luke Shaw suffering a double leg fracture against PSV.

The defender suffered the injury 15 minutes into the Champions League match when he was caught in the box by a sliding challenge from Hector Moreno.

The game was stopped for almost 10 minutes as Shaw was given oxygen and then taken off a stretcher.

He was subsequently taken to a hospital in Eindhoven while Moreno was not penalised for the challenge.

“When I say it was a penalty and red card I am a bad loser,” said Van Gaal after the 2-1 defeat. “Every word I say is always interpreted in the wrong way, but it was in the 16m [penalty area] and I think it was a very bad tackle with two legs.

“It is awful. He’s a boy who came to Manchester as an 18-year-old [in 2014], had a very difficult season, then second season he plays fantastic, and then this happens.

“When he was going into the dressing room he was with an oxygen mask and was crying.”

PSV coach Phillip Cocu defended Moreno, saying: “The intention was not to injure the opponent.”

Shaw is expected to travel back to Manchester with the rest of the squad on Wednesday before undergoing surgery.
