Patson Dzamara escapes abduction

Patson Dzamara, the brother to abducted activist, Itai Dzamara, on Wednesday escaped abduction from yet to be known assailants.

This emerged at Harare magistrate court after Patson, was dragged to court together with four other accused persons facing charges of robbery and assaulting  police officers .

Obey Shava, who was representing the five activists told the court that on the 8th of June 2016 at around midnight there was an attempt to abduct, Patson who is the first accused person.

The failed attempt to kidnap Patson took place at Africa Unit Square, where he and other several activists, were camped in protest against government’s misrule.

The accused persons claimed that they recognised Assistant Inspector Chafa from the Law and Order department, whom they said was among the attackers.

Shava pleaded with the court that the abduction of people must be investigated. He added that there are case studies in which those abducted are not brought back.

“There is a history of people being abducted by unknown attackers who drive unmarked cars, so therefore I apply the court to order for investigation of this matter,” said Shava.

In his ruling, Magistrate Mahwe ordered the attempted abduction matter to be investigated.

He then however ordered the accused persons to pay $5000 bail, with each one of them paying $1000 for the two counts they are being charged with. The case was adjourned to 28 June 2016.
