Police Arrest Protesting Teachers

ZIMBABWE Republic Police (ZRP) officers on Monday 7 January 2019 arrested nine leaders of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) as they embarked on a demonstration protesting against poor remuneration and working conditions.

ZRP officers arrested the ARTUZ leaders at Africa Unity Square in central Harare and detained them at Harare Central Police Station.

The nine ARTUZ leaders include Obert Masaraure, Christine Jubane, Robson Chere, Regai Chinhuto, Fortune Jamela, Lawrence Mapengo, Andrew Munguri, Munyaradzi Ndawana and Gerald Tawengwa.

ZRP officers are yet to prefer any charges against the unionists, who recently petitioned Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube demanding payment of their salaries in foreign currency and full payment of their annual bonus.
