MSU VC blasted for ‘illegally’ suspending student

Midlands State University Vice Chancellor, Ngwabi Bhebe came under fire for ‘illegally’ suspending a female student who is being accused for circulating a message blasting the Zvishavane- University campus.

Addressing journalists at a Youth Advocacy for Reform and Democracy, (YARD) press conference in Harare yesterday, Munyaradzi Rushwaya Chuma a student activist, opposed the suspension of Fanele Maqebe saying that MSU VC was not supposed   to suspend the student over speculations.

“The suspension of Fanele does not give the VC immunity to transparency and accountability at all,” he said.

Rushwaya demanded that Fanele should be awarded a proper hearing and explanation.

“As a commander in Chief of Justice at MSU, I demand that Fanele be called for a proper hearing, together with her lawyers before the public.

“Vice Chancellor must be given the onus to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Fanele indeed wrote the massage,” said Rushwaya, adding that the VC must explain to the students the law he is using to charge Fanele.

Commenting on the new MSU- Zvishavane campus Rushwaya said that the health facilities at the new institution are not fit for human habitation and not worthy the fees being  paid by the students.

“It is common knowledge that MSU is the most expensive state university in the country yet it provides services that do not tally with the prices.

“It is the background of poor service delivery against exorbitant fees which students are against not unchecked mutation of campuses all over Zimbabwe,” said Rushwaya likening the Zvishavane campus to Gonakudzingwa and Hwahwa detention camps.

University of Zimbabwe SRC president Tonderai Dombo also condemned the expulsion of students is saying it is highly unacceptable.

Meanwhile, YARD founder Temba Mliswa said that his organization is going to stand for Fanele, and make sure that she is brought back to school.
