The Japanese government has availed a grant of US$ 1 million to the victims of the Tokwe Mukosi floods.
The flood victims who have been relocated to Nauentsi ranch in Mwenezi are said to be living under inhuman conditions.
The grant was availed to UNICEF under the project ‘Support to flood displaced children and women relocated from Chingwizi Camp’.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Japanese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Yoshi Tendai Hiraishi said flood victims are living under inhuman conditions, hence his country’s intervention.
“Despite government efforts to ensure that basic services are provided, the affected population have been placed under vulnerable conditions, with most of these services requiring additional resources to be fulfilled.
“The project basically focuses on four basic lifesaving activities, which target the alleviation of the plight of children in an urgent manner . These are Heath and Nutrition, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Child protection and Education,” said the Japanese ambassador to Zimbabwe.
The Tokwe Mukosi floods affected approximately 16 000 people among them 10 000 children.
Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere applauded the gesture by the Japanese government saying the donation will go a long way in assisting the families at Nuanetsi Ranch.
“Interventions such as these, uphold the dignity and well-being of Zimbabwe citizens during their hour of need.
“Government continues to prioritize sustainable service delivery and efforts are being made to ensure the affected receive the requisite essential services such as health care, education, water , sanitation and hygiene as well as social protection,” said minister Kasukuwere
He also said the money will be used to assist the relocated families.
“This donation by the Japanese government will be channeled towards supporting relocated families to have access to basic and lifesaving services,” he said.
