Unplugged Shrugs Off Cholera Fears

Despite two major gigs, RSVP and Ammartia Ignite slated for Harare being canceled due to the cholera epidemic, organizers of the Unplugged concert will this weekend proceed with their popular monthly music festival albeit in Domboshava.

Speaking to 263Chat, Unplugged co-founder Chiedza Danha said, though some of the events were previously canceled, they approached the local authority to establish what could make the event possible rather than vice-versa.

“We wanted to have a separate discussion with authorities to establish what was possible. Many events have been cleared but for others the risk was higher of last minute cancellation because they were bringing in acts from abroad. Of course we are concerned about the cholera situation but will take every precaution necessary,” said Danha.

She added that unlike with other events, they will work with fewer bodies and vendors as precautionary measure against the water borne disease that has so far claimed 45 lives in the country.

“We are working with a few bodies to ensure that the space we are using is as safe as possible. We are also limiting the number of vendors handling food and drink and enforcing very strict rules, including collective inspections of their kitchens and insisting on the most sanitary conditions. We will be bringing in industrial sized water tanks with treated water and dispensers for sanitizer,” she said.

As summer time gets into full swing, this month’s edition will be running under the “Beach” theme accompanied by a venue with a water body.

“The beach theme is exactly what it sounds like. It is in the vicinity of a beautiful water body on a farm which is about a seven minute drive from Helensvale shops. We’ll have beach sand, zimbrellas, a tiki bar, lots of and beach games and the chill zone will have a large cabana…of course a really cool line up too. It remains a family friendly event and we want to maintain that positive and safe ambiance. There will be lots of games and activities for the kids as well,” she added.

Winky D, Josh Meck, Zinarayah, Mussa Effect, Reverb 7 and TK Beatz will be responsible of entertainment.
