A human rights lawyer, Kudzai Kadzere, who was severely assaulted by police on Saturday, has been arrested.
The lawyer was arrested while making a police report against officers who assaulted him and broke his arm.
Reports indicate that Kadzere was assisting opposition party members who had been nabbed at Budiriro Police Station for an alleged illegal gathering.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Kadzere is accused of escaping from lawful custody with his lawyer.
“Our member lawyer Kadzere, who is a victim of police brutality has been arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)as he together with his lawyer, Nontokozo Dube Tachiona was in the process of filing a police report for assault. ZRP is alleging that Kadzere escaped from lawful custody,” said ZLHR in a statement.
The arrest comes after 23 Citizens Coalition of Change (CCC) activists and two parliamentarians Amos Chibaya and Costa Machingauta were arrested on Saturday for allegedly breaching the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA).
They have since been transferred to Harare Central police where they are being held awaiting a court appearance.
