Renovations to the National Sports Stadium are at an advanced stage with major upgrades currently underway, including the installation of bucket seats and pitch overhauls, Deputy Minister of Sports Emily Jesaya has confirmed.
Addressing Parliament yesterday, Jesaya said the installation of bucket seats is “at an advanced stage,” with Confederation of African Football (CAF) officials already on the ground inspecting the progress and offering technical guidance.
“With regards to the football pitch, we are also at an advanced stage with the works. CAF officials have come into the country to inspect what is being done. We are expecting to finish the National Sports Stadium in the third quarter of this year,” said Jesaya
The stadium was from hosting international fixtures due to failing to meet international standards.
Jesaya said her Ministry’s goal is to provide “befitting sports facilities, leaving no place and no one behind.”
The Deputy Minister also highlighted a broader government initiative to evaluate and upgrade stadiums across the country confirming that the Ministry, alongside the Sports and Recreation Commission had visited facilities including Bulawayo’s White City Stadium and Harare’s Rufaro Stadium both of which are undergoing assessments and repairs.
Some of the facilities fall under local authorities prompting ongoing consultations to elevate them to internationally approved standards.
