Zimbabwe set to return to English soil for first Test in over two decades
By Kudzaiishe Zvaguma
Zimbabwe Cricket has named a 15-member squad for their upcoming historic Test match against England, scheduled for 22–25 May 2025 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
This fixture marks Zimbabwe’s first Test appearance in England since 2003. The once-off Test match holds significant importance for both nations. Zimbabwe and England have faced off six times in Test cricket, with England winning three matches and the remaining three ending in draws. This will be the first time the Zimbabwe national cricket team competes in a Test match on English soil in over 20 years, adding a layer of historical significance.
Zimbabwe’s selection panel has made three changes to the squad that recently drew 1-1 in a two-match Test series against Bangladesh.
- Sikandar Raza returns to the side, replacing Jonathan Campbell.
- Clive Madande rejoins the squad as the backup wicketkeeper in place of Naysha Mayavo.
- Newman Nyamhuri, a pace bowler, replaces leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa as Zimbabwe prepares for seam-friendly English conditions.
These changes suggest Zimbabwe is placing a premium on pace and experience to challenge England in their home environment.
Zimbabwe head coach Justin Sammons expressed confidence in his squad, stating:
“I expect us to walk out there believing we belong. It’s about embracing the moment and competing at a standard that matches one of the best teams in the world.”
Back home, fans are buzzing with excitement and hope.
Tapiwa Mukonho, a Harare resident, said:
“I’m looking forward to seeing Blessing Muzarabani take on England. But we’ll need a complete team effort to stand a chance.”
Following the England Test, Zimbabwe is set to play a four-day match against South Africa from 3–6 June 2025 at Arundel, further enriching their international calendar and providing valuable exposure to top-tier competition.
